Health, Diet and Nutrition

April 4, 2009 · Leave a Comment

More and more people are now going back to basics—in terms of food and health practices—because they would want to achieve prime health and fitness. With the fast-paced, technologically-driven world people are now living, who would not want to veer away from certain medical conditions and illnesses.

Experts say that because of the busy courses of people’s lives, many of them tend to forget some of the vital fragments in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which is diet and nutrition.

Identifying the thin line

Although the terms “diet” and “nutrition” have different definitions, they are greatly connected to each other. When defined, “diet” refers to the food and liquid intake of a person while “nutrition” pertains to the science of dealing with food and nourishment. Sometimes, many people get confused with the meanings of the two because they automatically assume that less—through diet—will not affect their health’s overall condition.

Experts say that more than the issues of food and liquid intake and the science of food and nourishment, diet and nutrition can revolve around nutritional information on various dietary supplements and the benefits vitamins and minerals to a person’s body. By making yourself familiar with latest diet and nutrition topics, trends, and tips can lead you to the renewal of your health and well being commitment inside your home.

You must remember that it’s never too late to redirect your eating habits, but before you take that drastic change, learn what are the common diet and nutrition mistakes so you can avoid them. Here are some realizations that can help you get by:

1. Don’t make careless assumption that the food choices you have are better than they actually are. Many experts believe that people who are very particular about diet and nutrition have larger tendencies of thinking and believing that their food choices are healthier than they really are. It is always advisable to eat whole, fresh, and unprocessed foods whenever possible to stay health and fit.

2. Don’t confuse yourself over carbohydrates. In some people that low carbohydrates diets are effective. But there are also those that say that there are excellent carbs that make people eat less. If you are confused, assess yourself first before cutting down on carbs totally. A consultation with a licensed dietician can help you determine how much carbohydrates does your body need and can also help you come up with a diet pattern will be good for you and can have long term effects.

3. Don’t think you’re eating too much when you’re actually not. Doctors say that one of the most common mistakes people make is that they overestimate and underestimate the amount of food their body needs. People are advised to monitor the portion sizes of your food to ensure that they are getting the key nutrients that their body needs.

4. Know when to eat and when not to eat. Experts believe that overeating and under eating may put an individual’s health at risk because it disrupts blood sugar and insulin levels. Knowing when to eat and when not can ensure that the person will get the nutrition the body type needs. Always make sure that you eat something every three hours and don’t starve before eating the next meal.

5. Don’t neglect the importance of regular exercise. There is now denying the wonderful benefits that regular exercise can do to people especially to those who want to achieve optimum health and fitness. To ensure that you stay healthy despite being on a diet, make exercise a regular part of your life can definitely contribute to your overall wellness.

Personal Accounting Basics

March 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

If you have a checking account, of course you balance it periodically to account for any differences between what’s in your statement and what you wrote down for checks and deposits. Many people do it once a month when their statement is mailed to them, but with the advent of online banking, you can do it daily if you’re the sort whose banking tends to get away from them.

You balance your checkbook to note any charges in your checking account that you haven’t recorded in your checkbook. Some of these can include ATM fees, overdraft fees, special transaction fees or low balance fees, if you’re required to keep a minimum balance in your account. You also balance your checkbook to record any credits that you haven’t noted previously. They might include automatic deposits, or refunds or other electronic deposits. Your checking account might be an interest-bearing account and you want to record any interest that it’s earned.

You also need to discover if you’ve made any errors in your recordkeeping or if the bank has made any errors.

Another form of accounting that we all dread is the filing of annual federal income tax returns. Many people use a CPA to do their returns; others do it themselves. Most forms include the following items:

Income – any money you’ve earned from working or owning assets, unless there are specific exemptions from income tax.

Personal exemptions – this is a certain amount of income that is excused from tax.

Standard deduction – some personal expenditures or business expenses can be deducted from your income to reduce the taxable amount of income. These expenses include items such as interest paid on your home mortgage, charitable contributions and property taxes.

Taxable income – This is the balance of income that’s subject to taxes after personal exemptions and deductions are factored in.

Personal accounting shouldn’t be a problem to you if you know the basics!

Seven Gardening By the Yard Tips

March 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

If you have a tiny yard and would like a simple but well-maintained garden, you only need two things – determination and know-how.  Here are some tips on how to keep your garden by the yard looking spruced up and glamorous.

1. Deadheading
Keep your border free from wilted flowers and dried leaves. Deadheading or removing dead flower heads will encourage the plants to produce more blooms for longer. Many perennials such as geraniums and dahlias, and some annuals benefit from having spent blooms removed

3. Pinch out tops.
Certain plants – especially foliage plants like Coleus – respond with a spurt of growth when their tops are pinched out. Pinching out makes the plant much bushier and so more blooms are produced. Fuchsias are prone to becoming leggy unless they are pinched out.

4. Fertilize lightly.
A minimal amount of fertilizer will further boost the growth of your vegetation. If you water your yard frequently, you have to fertilize it more regularly because of nutrient depletion. A fortnightly application of liquid fertilizer is sometimes more beneficial than granules as it is more readily absorbed by the leaves. Container plants will be considerably healthier with a half-strength solution of liquid fertilizer applied regularly.

5. Weed out.
This is one of the best ways to preserve the beauty of your garden by the yard.  Remember, weeds compete with your plants for both nutrients and moisture. If the weeds are not close to seeding, leave them on the bed to rot down for mulch. If you must use a weedicide, try and get a wick applicator, rather than a spray. This will protect you plants from spray-drift.

6. Water them well
One good tip when it comes to watering your garden by the yard is to give it a thorough soaking once a week, making sure there is no run-off to cause erosion. Deep watering will encourage the growth of deeper roots that will be able to withstand dry spells weatherwise

7. Say no to chemicals
Chemicals are dangerous to humans and often kill the natural predators of the pest in your garden, so avoid them if possible. There are many organic alternatives that work almost as well.

With these simple tips, your garden by the yard will soon be the envy of your neighbors.

Help for Colic

March 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hearing a baby cry is part of life. This is because the infant cannot talk yet to say what he or she wants so the parents have to do whatever it takes to make it stop. Should this occur longer than usual, some will overreact and think there is something wrong with the child.

Some will even drive the newborn to the hospital only to find out that this is normal. Doctors will explain that this is just an indication that the baby is colic.

The colic phase occurs during the first three weeks until the third or fourth of age. This may seem like a long time but this too shall pass gradually.

There are various causes why this happens but the only thing that the parents should focus on is how to make it stop.

Parents should be well aware that this may happen at anytime. It can happen early in the morning, in the afternoon when the baby should be napping or late at night. This is because the biological clock of a newborn is very different than an adult.

Those who are raising the infant will wake up and won’t even get the usual amount of sleep. This will leave the couple feeling even if there is a shifting schedule.

When the baby cries, ignoring it won’t make it stop. Someone has to get up and see what is wrong. The baby’s diapers may need to be changed or it has to be fed. If this is not the problem, maybe holding the infant in one’s arms and singing a lullaby can work.

One thing that parents should not forget to do after breastfeeding is making the child burp. This is known to be one of the causes of colic.

The standard checks do not change during the daytime. Sometimes, the baby needs a new atmosphere so bringing it out can work. The parents can use a carriage then just relax in the park or go for a drive in the car.

A warm bath can also help the colic baby stop crying. This is because the same thing works for adults who need an outlet to let the stress out. The temperature of the water should be checked before putting the newborn in since it could be too hot for the skin.

The use of accessories can also help remedy the colic baby. Toys can be hung around the crib while a CD can be played in the background. These things don’t cost that much and are effective in letting the baby get the much needed rest.

Aside from the accessories and the tender loving care given by the parents, the mother can also help the colic child by watching the food intake.

Some foods are known to produce gas and this is passed on to the baby in the form of milk during breastfeeding. This can be prevented by knowing which products should not be eaten.  If this doesn’t work, this is the only time that Simethicone drops should be given.

Raising a baby will have its highs and lows. The colic phase is just the first of many challenges that the parents will experience. Hiring a babysitter to assist during this time can help but nothing compares to the loving care of both the father and the mother.

Whitney Houston and Her Drug Addiction

January 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The movie and music industry is a tough business.  No one knows that better than Whitney Houston.  Drug addiction knows no boundaries as well.  No one knows that better than Whiney Houston either.  So many celebrities have come forward with their drug addiction problems with strength that many people are in awe of.  Perhaps it’s because of their celebrity or maybe it’s just because they are being so honest with their fans and the public.

It doesn’t matter.  Celebrity drug use is a given in the world they live in.  Whitney Houston came upon fame rather quickly becoming a sweetheart of 1990’s music.  She was arrested in January of 2000 for possession of marijuana at an airport after two baggies of pot and three partially smoked joints were found in her luggage.

When she married fellow songster Bobby Brown, it seemed her drug use became more intense.  Whitney has been in and out of rehab repeatedly to overcome addictions to marijuana, cocaine, and assorted pills.  But the good news is that she found help for her drug addiction.

Life isn’t always easy.  Many of us want a way out of the crazy hustle and bustle.  The easy way out is to use drugs.  The drugs work on the mind making everyday problems seems trivial.  Think about what it might be like for a celebrity like Whitney Houston whose everyday problems involve record contracts, the media, and huge money issues.

It’s not a wonder we’re a drug addicted society.  The most promising part of Whitney’s addiction is that she realized that she had a drug problem and sought out help with that drug addiction.  She entered a rehab facility as so many other celebrities have done and found ways to cope with not only the stressors of life, but also with the pull towards drugs that she was bound to feel.

Just like Whitney Houston, you are not alone in your drug addiction.  There are places you can go to seek help, and it doesn’t have to be an expensive drug rehab center.  Seek help from your community.  Look for self-help organizations through a church, a therapist, or even in the telephone book.

Sure, Whitney Houston has been through a lot with her drug addiction, but now she’s on the road to recovery.  You can be just like her.  All it takes is a little honesty with yourself and a little bit of courage.  Let the people who are out there to help you lead you along the way.  You won’t be sorry, just like Whitney isn’t sorry either!

Drug Addiction Support Groups

December 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

When you are suffering from a drug addiction, finding a support group is so important to your recovery.  Support groups can give you new insight into your addiction, but more importantly, they can provide you with strength and courage to go ahead and beat your addiction.

What types of support groups are out there?  There are many.  Alcoholics Anonymous has been the foundation for many offshoots that deal with all sorts of addiction problems.  Narcotics Anonymous deals with people who have addictions to narcotic drugs, Al-Anon helps family members who are trying to cope with a loved one who has an addiction, and there are many more.

Many churches offer faith-based support groups that deal with addictions of all types.  You don’t necessarily have to be a member of that particular church to attend their support group either.  All you have to do is ask to join.  Faith-based support groups are generally very accepting of non-members, and when you ask for their help, they are usually there to welcome you with open arms.

Drug addiction is a difficult vice to overcome.  When you have the help of a therapist or counselor, you will be better off.  Ask your counselor if he or she can recommend an appropriate support group for you to attend.  They usually have all the information you’ll need to guide you toward one that is right for you.

Hospitals also will offer support groups for drug addiction.  Contact the administrator and ask about what they have to offer and whether or not their groups are ones that could help you on the road to recovery.

Don’t discount online support groups that address drug addiction.  When you do a simple Internet search, you will find all sorts of places that offer online support for your addiction.  These groups will have chat times where you can discuss the problems you are having and often also have message boards where you can post questions and concerns.

When looking for a support group to treat your drug addiction, you should find one that makes you feel comfortable.  Try to find one that has members around your own age.  It’s often easier to talk to people who are your peers – that means age appropriate peers.  If you are a teen struggling with drug addiction, it’s generally not a good idea to be in a support group with mostly middle-aged people.

Finding a support group for your drug addiction is such a huge component of your recovery, it should not be overlooked.  Look around and pick the right one for you.  And know that you’re not alone in your addiction – or your recovery!

Buying New Construction? Don’t Let Those Builders Push You Around!

November 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

From the concrete streets of metropolitan cities to the sprawling suburbs in most areas around the country, new construction is present in the form of townhouses, condominiums, single homes and the ever-so-popular “over-55 communities.”

While many of these properties are esthetically impressive complete with over-sized family rooms, open kitchen areas, and every upgrade/option imaginable, there are also the unfortunate, yet inevitable pitfalls associated with new construction such as delayed completion dates, cost overruns and building defects. With respect to the latter, buyers of new construction should be informed of their legal rights in the event that construction defects impede their use and enjoyment of the property.

Traditionally, a vendor of property is responsible for the quality of the property sold only to the extent that the vendor expressly agrees to be responsible. In years past, the notion was that a seller and buyer dealt with one another at “arm’s length” and, therefore the buyer should only be afforded the specific protection for which he/she contracts. However, in the context of new construction, the laws started to change over the past few decades. In states such as the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, a well-established body of case law has evolved that has afforded protection to buyers in the form of implied warranties.

The “implied warranty of habitability” and “implied warranty of reasonable construction” exist between a builder-vendor of new construction and a buyer regardless of whether any mention of such warranties is actually written into the contract of sale (those huge 25-plus page contracts that builders make you sign!). These warranties, which automatically exist between builder-vendors and buyers, represent that the property is suitable for living and is constructed with a reasonable level of skill and workmanship. Further, these warranties apply whether the buyer purchases the new home prior to, during or after completion of construction.

So, what does this mean for those of you who are about to purchase a plush, new townhouse on a golf course? It means that you may have legal recourse in the event that the builder has improperly constructed your home and/or constructed the home with defects that make the property unfit for living. Some examples of defects that could trigger these warranties and potentially provide you with a cause of action against the builder-vendor include: severe water leakage leading to mold growth, faulty plumbing, contaminated water supply, improper foundation and faulty landfill/site development.

Even though the courts in Pennsylvania (and some other states) have consistently found that these implied warranties afford buyers of new construction protection from faulty workmanship, BEWARE…a builder-vendor could attempt to disclaim such warranties in the contract of sale. The Pennsylvania courts have ruled that a builder-vendor CAN disclaim these implied warranties but the disclaimer language must be clear, unambiguous and set forth in the contract. This means that the builder-vendor will not get away with burying the disclaimer somewhere in that bible-sized contract of sale. However, if the disclaimer language is clear, easy to find in the contract, and easy to understand, then there is a good chance that a court would uphold the disclaimer. Under that circumstance, it would be unlikely that you would prevail in asserting a claim that the builder breached one or both of these warranties. For this very reason, it is your absolute responsibility to thoroughly read your contract of sale (or at least hire a highly skilled real estate attorney to read through it for you!!). The last thing that a judge wants to hear is that you didn’t realize the builder-vendor disclaimed the implied warranties because you failed to read your contract of sale.

So, here is a little recap:

1. Builders of new construction have an obligation to make sure the property is built in a reasonable, workmanlike manner and fit for living.

2. The implied warranties of habitability and reasonable construction protect buyers regardless of the warranty provisions in the contract of sale.

3. A builder can disclaim these warranties by using clear, unambiguous language in the contract.

4. All buyers should thoroughly read through the contract of sale.

5. If your new home has significant defects and is unfit for you to live in, then you should consult an attorney to see if you have valid claims against the builder.

You are now ready to go looking for that beautiful new home…just remember, if your house has major defects, don’t back down from that big, bad builder—the law looks to protect buyers of new construction and you need to pursue all of your legal remedies!!

Planning a Theme Park Family Reunion

October 25, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Most everyone has been to a family reunion at a house or park.  It is fun for most people but some will be bored and wish for a more exciting reunion next year.

If you have your family reunion at a theme park, it is a lot of fun and can be part of a vacation for you too.  It might be difficult to have everyone attend but you want to get as many involved as you can so that it is not too stressful for one person.

Most everyone lives near some type of park or amusement type area.  It might be a large park like Disneyland or somewhere smaller like Six Flags or something even smaller.  No matter what or where you go, you want to plan a lot of fun for your family members.

The things is that you need to make sure that everyone gets to the destination on time for the reunion.  Driving for more than twelve hours can be hard on families that have kids and they may be in a bad mood for the party once they get there.

Keeping the family together for a family reunion is something that you want to keep in mind.  It is easy for family members to loose each other and you do not want anyone to get lost at your big event.

One good solution is to have a meeting at certain times before the reunion.  A good place to meet would be at the entrance or the picnic area every few hours so that you can make sure that everyone is still there and having fun.

Once you have everyone together you should take a family picture. Having this will give everyone a little keepsake of the important day and also give everyone a good chance to talk and have fun.

Should I re-decorate my apartment?

October 15, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Last weekend I visited one of my best friends, who has redecorated her apartment. The result was amazing. It looked like a totally different apartment now and it was much nicer. After that visit, I’ve been thinking: maybe I should re-decorate my apartment as well. I’ve been living here for more than two years and maybe I should give it a brand new look.
